Recent Progress in the Physics of Thermal Transport

17/07/2017 – 21/07/2017

Theoretical and experimental aspects of thermal transport have recently attraced much attention due to the incerasing need of thermal management in submicron scale computer and optoelectronic devices.
On the theory side, thermal conductivity of real bulk materials and conductance of interfaces can now be computed from first principles density-functional theory without the need to invoke any fitting parameters. Thermal transport due to harmonic phonons in disordered systems has also been investigated using analytical and numerical tools.

We would like to bring together experts and students from different communities to share their interest and experience in the fields of thermal transport, non-linear dynamics and localization.

Topics of interest, which we plan to address in this workshop include:

  • Ballistic, superdiffusive and hydrodynamic versus diffusive transport of heat,
  • Coherent versus incoherent phonon transport in nanostructured materials,
  • Phonon localization and their contribution to heat transport,
  • Thermal (phononic) devices such as phonon diodes and switches,
  • Non-equilibrium transport of heat,
  • Electron versus phonon contribution and violations of Wiedemann-Franz law,
  • Intrinsic localized modes or discrete breathers in anharmonic lattices,
  • New transport formalisms

The workshop is organized and mainly sponsored by the International Center for Theoretical Physics – Eurasian Centre for Advanced Research (ICTP-ECAR) and will take place from July 17 to 21st of 2017 at the Izmir Institute of Technology, Izmir, Turkey.
